See What Changed Between Two Shopify Product Exports
A product CSV is a snapshot. On its own it tells you what a catalog looks like today. Put two snapshots side by side and you can see what moved: which prices were cut, what was added to the range, what was quietly dropped. Doing that by hand means lining up thousands of rows in a spreadsheet and writing lookup formulas that break whenever a row is added.
The Catalog Change Tracker does the comparison for you. Upload an older and a newer CSV of the same store and it lists every difference, grouped by type, with the old value, the new value and the percentage change. The full list downloads as a CSV for filtering and sorting.
Three Ways Store Owners Use It
Competitor Price Tracking
Export a competitor's public catalog each week and compare it with the week before. You see exactly which products they repriced and by how much, when a sale starts and ends, and what they have launched or discontinued.
Auditing Your Own Store
Export before and after a bulk edit, a CSV import or a stock sync run. The report confirms the change did what you intended, and shows anything it touched that you did not expect.
Watching a Supplier
If you dropship from a supplier with a public Shopify store, comparing their catalog over time shows new lines to list, discontinued lines to remove, and price rises to pass on before they cut into your margin.
What the Report Covers
- Price increases and decreases for every variant, largest percentage change first.
- Sales started and ended, detected from a compare-at price appearing above the price or disappearing.
- New and removed products, with the number of variants and the starting price.
- New and removed variants on products that exist in both files, such as an added size.
- Renamed products, where the handle changed but the SKUs are the same.
- Title changes.
- Stock running out or returning, when both files include inventory quantities.
Prices are compared as numbers, so a file that was opened and re-saved in a spreadsheet (turning 139.00 into 139) does not produce false changes.
How to Compare Two Shopify Catalogs in 4 Steps
- Get the Older File: Use a product export or scrape you saved earlier. Put the date in the file name when you save it so the two are easy to tell apart.
- Get the Newer File: Take a fresh export of the same store today.
- Upload Both: Older file first, newer file second, then click Compare Catalogs.
- Review and Download: Open each group to see the rows, or download the full change list as a CSV.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I track a competitor's prices on Shopify?
Export the competitor's public catalog to CSV on a regular schedule, for example weekly, and keep each file. Upload last week's file and this week's file to the Change Tracker to see which prices went up or down, what was added and what was removed.
How are products and variants matched between the two files?
Products are matched by handle. Variants are matched by their option values, then by SKU. If a handle has disappeared but its SKUs appear under a new handle, the product is reported as renamed rather than as one removal and one addition.
Can I compare two different stores?
The tool is built to compare one store at two points in time. Two different stores rarely share handles, so nearly everything would show as new or removed.
Does it track stock levels?
Only when both files include the Variant Inventory Qty column, as Shopify's own exports do. It then reports variants that went out of stock or came back in stock. Files scraped from a public storefront do not contain stock quantities.
Are my CSV files stored on your server?
No. Both files are used only to build the comparison for that request and are discarded as soon as it finishes.
